Ottawa to invest $40 million in the port of Cap-aux-Meules

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in the archipelago on Friday to announce an investment of $40 million for the construction of a new fishermen’s wharf in the port of Cap-aux-Meules.

This announcement is in keeping with the promise made last year to the Magdalen Islanders.

The temporary wharf completed this spring will be used during the four years planned for the construction of the new facilities, says Diane Lebouthillier, MNA for Gaspésie and the Islands and Minister of National Revenue.

The port of Cap-aux-Meules was removed in 2021 from the infrastructures listed in the Federal Port Facilities Transfer Program, after community stakeholders put pressure on the federal government.

Mr. Trudeau committed that Ottawa would retain long-term responsibility for the site.

It should be noted that no sitting Canadian Prime Minister had set foot on the archipelago since his father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who visited in 1970, when he also announced major work on the Cap-aux-Meules harbour.
