Homecare: L’Essentiel calls for better government planning
The Corporation de service d’aide à domicile l’Essentiel joins its counterparts across the province in calling for greater equity and responsiveness from the government.
This follows the recent publication of the Auditor General of Quebec’s report on long-term care.
The report highlights the lack of an action plan to reduce the current service deficit in home care, as well as the government’s lack of awareness of the costs associated with maintaining seniors in their homes.
Roméo Deraspe, Executive Director of l’Essentiel, expresses his frustration with what he sees as a lack of understanding of the front-line work done by home support services.
The COVID bonus was not renewed, which means a sudden drop in pay of 8%.
However, this bonus was extended for an additional year for the staff of seniors’ residences, which is an inconsistency according to Mr. Deraspe.
He also says that home care services are less expensive than long-term housing services for seniors.
Mr. Deraspe estimates that between 350 and 400 Madelinots are currently supported by L’Essentiel.
