Grosse-Île councillor David Burke has resigned
A second councillor for the Municipality of Grosse-Île, David Burke, officially left his position on March 26.
Interviewed by the Radar, the fisherman justified his resignation by citing the additional workload associated with the wind farm project, in addition to the stress caused by residents’ discontent with the project led by developer Nutrinor-Gilbert Renewable Energies. As a sign of the tensions plaguing the English-speaking community, Grosse-Île Town Hall is currently closed to the public except by appointment, due to alleged aggressive incidents towards elected officials and municipal staff.
David Burke’s departure came ten days after that of his colleague Dale Clarke, reducing the number of councillors by half. A by-election will be held on May 24 to fill the two vacant seats.
Until then, a sufficient quorum remains in place for the municipality to continue its operations as normal.
It is worth noting that, with the exception of Mayor Gordon Burke, all council members elected last fall were serving their first term.
