Groupe Persévérance scolaireseeks mentors to spend quality time with struggling youth
The Groupe Persévérance scolaire wants to relaunch its mentoring program for Magdalen Island children who are experiencing various difficulties.
The initiative, which has been on hold for the past three years due to the health situation, aims to promote the perseverance and success of young people in elementary and high school who are in vulnerable situations.
The objective is to develop a quality relationship with a young person by going to meet him or her and sharing leisure time, all with a view to helping him or her develop confidence.
Those interested are invited to a relaxed and festive information session scheduled for Monday evening at the café-bar Chez Renard.
A pairing will be made according to the interests of the mentors and mentees, explains the program manager, Guylaine Coderre.
More broadly, the meeting aims to revive a sense of community and to stimulate adult involvement in the lives of young Magdalen Islanders who are referred to the Groupe Persévérance scolaire.
Its coordinator, Jean-Hugues Robert, talks about how developing a sincere relationship with the children, even if it’s only for an hour a week, allows them to make progress in the face of the various obstacles they face.
The GPS initiative is made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Fondation Madeli-aide pour l’éducation and Complice-Persévérance scolaire Gaspésie-les Îles.
