Municipal elections: candidates are scarce in Grosse-Île
Only three people have expressed interest in joining the Grosse-Île municipal council.
Michelle Chevarie, Maurane Francoeur and David Burke have submitted their nomination papers to serve as councillors. As of Thursday morning, this means that two positions, including that of mayor, remained vacant, according to deputy clerk-treasurer Karina Cyr.
The English-speaking community faced major recruitment challenges within its administration last year. A series of resignations ultimately led to Grosse-Île being placed under temporary administration by the Quebec Municipal Commission.
The number of councillors was also reduced from 6 to 4 due to the difficulty in finding candidates.
Interested citizens have until October 3rd at 4:30 p.m. to come forward.
It should also be noted that the Municipality of Grosse-Île will need to loof for a new city manager. Linda Romano, who took office last March, has chosen to leave the archipelago. She will provide about ten hours of remote work until a replacement is hired.
