The Municipality of Grosse-Île contemplates reducing the number of seats at its council table.

Following changes to the legal framework in June, localities with less than 2,000 inhabitants now have the possibility of reducing their number of councilors from six to four.

The director general of the English-speaking municipality, Carole Lemieux, explains that this would be a way to avoid repeated by-elections for seats that are difficult to fill.

She adds that elected officials are reluctantly considering this change.

Grosse-Île residents are invited to a public consultation regarding this proposal on the evening of December 9th.

A proper bylaw must then be adopted by elected officials at the next public meeting, on December 16th.

Should the bylaw be adopted, the new composition of the council would come into force as of the next general election, scheduled for November 2, 2025.
