TC investments in the Islands: the port of Cap-aux-Meules before the runway of Havre-aux-Maisons
The extension of the Havre-aux-Maisons airport runway is far behind the port of Cap-aux-Meules on Transport Canada’s list of priorities.
During a visit to the Islands, Diane Lebouthillier, the federal MP for the region, is categorical: the repair of port facilities is the main file that is moving behind the department’s doors.
According to her, exporting lobster by air would require too many infrastructure upgrades in addition to the amounts required to lengthen the runway.
She reminds us that the industry benefits from other avenues to export its products and considers the economic activity period a little short to justify such public investments.
In addition, the MP went to see for herself the pier dock installed in the port of Cap-aux-Meules and considers the temporary solution favoured by Transport Canada to be satisfactory, although not perfect.
She added that improvements are and will be made as needed.
Ms. Lebouthillier also stated that the file is moving forward, but warned users to be patient, as she was unable to provide a timetable and indicated that the work would be spread out over several years and would inevitably cause some disruption.
