Grosse-Île will reduce its number of municipal councilors from 6 to 4
The Grosse-Île municipal council will go from six to four councilors as of the next general elections, scheduled for November 2nd, 2025.
The decision was ratified Monday evening, during an extraordinary session of the English-speaking municipality.
According to elected officials, it has become difficult to recruit candidates to sit at the council table.
Earlier this fall, Grosse-Île was placed under provisional administration by the Quebec Municipal Commission, due to a high number of resignations which had caused it to lose the quorum necessary for elected officials to be able to adopt resolutions.
The by-election which aimed to fill the vacant seats only made it possible to recruit two councilors out of three.
Following changes to the legal framework in June, localities with less than 2,000 inhabitants can now reduce the number of councilors from six to four.
