The Musée de la Mer acquires the Grande Saline

Îles de la Madeleine

The Musée de la Mer is acquiring the Grande Saline heritage building, where the former aquarium was located on the La Grave historic site.

While the sale process is not yet complete, the offer to purchase was unanimously accepted by the members of the Historic Site Committee at a special meeting held on March 31, and subsequently accepted by the Corporation de la Grande Saline .

The president of the organization, Brigitte Carrier, explains that after major repairs and three years without a complete program of activities due to Hurricane Dorian and the pandemic, the museum’s proposal came at the right time.

Created in 2017 with the goal of renovating the building and breathing new life into it, the Corporation of the Great Salt Works will be dissolved once the torch is officially passed.

The person piloting the file for the Musée de la Mer, Louis Cormier, explains that the building will become a place dedicated to the history of the La Grave site in order to detail its historical character.

He noted that the interior will be remodeled to make it more suitable for future exhibits and that a partial opening is planned for this summer.

Mr. Cormier mentioned that the value of the sale was a nominal $1 plus the building’s mortgage balances of approximately $60,000.
